Visiting B.A. like a tourist - Visiter B.A. comme une touriste

I have not written for two weeks as I enjoyed the visit of a Montreal friend. We have walked across the city, non-stop. Following are some pictures of happy moments.

On our first day, I take Jacques for the grand guides tour of the city, by bus. After one hour, the bus stops in Las Caminitas and allows us to stretch and visit. But I lost my ticket and I am not permitted to hop back on. We decide to have lunch the that neibourhoud and to visit. Excellent idea. We eat accompanied by the songs of a melancholic tango singer. A bit further down the street, young tango dancers perform for the tourists and pass the hat. That tango for tourists.

Las Caminitas is known for its colored houses and its commercial and touristic activities. But it is pretty.

Another day, we discover thé gréât monuments of thé downtown area. The Obelisk was offereing one of the few elevated points of view over the perfectly flat city. It has been shut down after a few suicides.
On Sunday, little car trafic. I was able to stand in the middle of this otherwise terribly busy street for a snapshot.

Like in Barcelona, Christopher Columbus is honored with a beautiful monument.

Every walk provides the occasion of discovering and admiring the impressive old houses and buildings built in the 19th century by the French and Italian immigrants.

A visit to the Recoleta cemetery, and in the shopping center behind which is offering a welcomed air-conditioned pause and allows for a different perspective of the historical site.

In the park that surrounds the cemetery, lives one of the oldest tree of B.A., a rubber tree of over three hundred years.

And dogs everywhere. I have never seen so many in a city.

On our way to the San Telmo Sunday Antiques Market for which I had so well studied the itinerary, I got lost  and we found ourselves on Av. de Mayo, at the door of the Café Tortoni, where, each day, dozens of tourists line up to enter. That Sunday morning, at around eleven, nobody in view. The Tortoni is to Buenos Aires, what the Café de Flore is to Paris. Do not miss it!

And finaly, the San Telmo Antiques Market, with its famous ancient soda-siphons, originals or copies, in which one adds a tea spoon of bicarbonate, water, shakes well and presses the small handle. Fizz! I was not able to taste the result, but feel it must taste like Vichy. I'll come back to it later.

All subway station's walls are decorated with ceramic murals, most often representing the life of centuries passed, but sometimes, like this one, presenting a modern scene of present life. It was made in 1985 by students of 5th and 7th grade.

So long for now.
À bientôt pour d'autres nouvelles.
