Ô Rome! * Oh my Rome!

Première semaine abrégée s'achève. Partie vers Rome sur un vol de nuit via Londres, je suis arrivée à mon appartement à la fin de l'après-midi, le lendemain. C'est la partie la plus fatiguante du voyage. Ces derniers jours ont pourtant été formidables et la belle température est au rendez-vous.

Voici mes premières photos. Elles ne suffisent pourtant pas à décrire mon plaisir de retrouver certains lieux, de revoir Rome, de m'y promener en liberté (mais sous la vigilance de soldats armés que l'on voit un peu partout).

A first short week is completed. Gone on a night flight via London, I arrived home the following day, at the end of the afternoon. It is indeed the most tiring portion of the journey. But the formidable Rome and the great weather were awaiting me. Here are my first few photos, although they cannot even come close to express my pleasure of re-discovering sites I have visited before, of walking free everywhere (but under the watch of armed soldiers found most everywhere).

Abreuvoir d'eau potable. Il y en a encore de nombreux. Il fut un temps où les Romains n'avaient pas l'eau courante. Fontaines et abreuvoirs étaient nourris par les aqueducs antiques qui faisaient la gloire des empereurs qui les ont bâtis.

Public drinking water fountains, still numerous in the city. There was a time when Romans had no running water. Fountains were distributing the water collected from the central mountains and brought to town by the aqueducts, the pride of the emperors who built them.

Pour rentrer, je passe derrière les Thermes de Dioclétien, vestige très imposant. Je vous y ramènerai puisqu'on y présente une exposition d'Henry Moore.

C'est l'hiver, je me sauve! - It's winter, I'm fleeing

C'est la bonne saison pour voyager en Europe. Il y a beaucoup moins de touristes et la température est vraiment agréable. Je pars en espérant ne pas avoir à subir les représailles de la terreur.

It's a great season to visit Europe. There are much less tourists and the weather is mild and pleasant. Here I go, hoping not to have to look terror in the eye.

Dernière aventure avant le retour : retour à Antibes et visite de Grasse - Last adventure before going back home

Dernier article avant le grand départ. Ce matin, 

j'ai pris le TER (train express regional) tôt pour arrêter prendre un café à Antibes que j'aime beaucoup, avant de continuer vers Grasse. La pluie tombée ailleurs a recouvert de neige les Alpes Maritimes.

Last entry before going back home. This morning, I took the TER train early so I could stop in Antibes, which I like very much, before moving on to Grasse. The rain that fell elsewhere has covered in snow the summits of the Maritimes Alps.

 Le temps d'un café, d'une courte visite et je reprends le train vers Grasse. La navette emmène les touristes de la gare au centre ville qui se trouve au sommet de la montagne surplombant la ville plus contemporaine.

Pause for a coffee and a short visit, then I hop on the train to Grasse. A bus service takes tourists from the train station up to the town center, strangely up on top of the mountain where the old city started.

Il faut risquer un détour sur les sombres ruelles perpendiculaires. Elles offrent une image de la vie moins touristiques, moins commerciale.

Milan, spectacular! Spectaculaire Milan!

Milan will be, I believe, the highlight of my winter holiday. What a beautiful, dynamic, lively city. To be visited again and again. 

Milan demeurera le meilleur moment de mes vacances d'hiver. C'est une merveilleuse ville, dynamique et vibrante. À revisiter encore et encore.

To start with, a visit at the Duomo. It took 600 years to build it. It seems to me that this church may have inspired partially the Sagrada Familia in Barcelone.

Milan has preserved its old tramway and added some more modern ones as well as an efficient subway.

Eze, la médiévale * Medieval Eze

Voici huit photos du village médiéval d'Eze, visité la semaine dernière, par une journée presque estivale. Beaucoup moins de visiteurs en cette saison, ce qui est appréciable. Les vieilles pierres parlent toujours du temps jadis. Piétons seulement, bien sûr.

Here are a few photos of the medieval village of Eze, visited last week by a summer like day. Much less visitors in this season, which is great. The old stones still tell stories of yesteryears. Pedestrians only, of course.

Nice, 10, St-Tropez, 0

 Pourquoi ce titre? Parce que ma très courte visite à St-Tropez a été extrêmement décevante. L'hiver, malgré la belle température, il n'y a rien, ni personne. Tout en fermé, condamné ou en réparation.
Marteaux piqueurs et compagnie sont à l'oeuvre. On ne pense qu'à se préparer pour la masse touristique des fêtards de l'été chaud. Pas de photos.

Why this title? Because my short visit in St-Tropez was extremely disappointing. During winter, in

spite of a beautiful climate, nothing, nobody. All is closed, shut down or undergoing repairs. Jack hammers and company are at work to prepare for the hot and intense touristic summer to come. No photos.

Marée spectaculaire à Nice - Spectacular high tide in Nice

Le troisième mois de mon séjour débute par une grande marée exceptionnelle et, sur la Promenade des Anglais, les piétons  s'agglutinent le long du garde-fou pour admirer le rare paysage. L'eau monte à quelques mètres du mur et certains s'en donnent à coeur joie pour jouer à courir devant les vagues.

The third month of my stay in Nice starts with an exceptional high tide, attracting a lot of spectators on the Promenade des Anglais. The waves are pushing water a few meters away from the walls and a few youngsters and photographs are playing tag with them.

Certains ne peuvent résister à l'idée de plonger dans les gros et puissants rouleaux.

Et il s'avère difficile de sortir du fort courant créé.

And it turns out to be difficult to get out of the water, the waves being quite powerful.

It is the end of the afternoon and the sunset is promising in the West...

Le vent est plutôt froid et les piétons préfèrent marcher plutôt que de s'asseoir.

The wind is cold and people prefer to walk rather than sit.

La lune annonce la fin d'une autre belle journée ensoleillée mais fraîche qui permet aux Niçoises de porter leur fourrure, ce qui me fait sourire. Pour ma part, mon coupe-vent me suffit. Une dizaine de degrés Celsius en février, c'est chaud pour une Montréalaise!

The moon marks the end of another sunny day, although cool, but which allows the Nice women to wear their furs, which makes me smile. As for me, I'm fine in my wind-breaker. Ten degrees Celsius in February is warm for a Montrealer!
